Practising

Practising is probably the most important part of golf. In the beginning you should practice with a professional golf teacher by having private lesson or by joinin a beginner group. When you practice with a good teacher, you can be sure that you obtain the right swing technique. If you learn to hit the ball yourself, you may get the wrong technique, which will be very hard to change later.

After you've had some lessons with a teacher you can start to practise by your self. The first thing that you may consider is to go to a driving range. A driving range is a place to practice long golf shots, it's quite similar to a shooting range. Using a driving range is quite easy, you just buy a bucket of balls, go to an empty place, and start hitting. But to get the full advantages of range practise you must follow some tips.

  • Always choose a target to hit at.
  • Don't hurry. Take each shot as it was the most important shot in your life.
  • Don't always practise the shots you're good at and like. It's more important to improve the shots that are hard for you.
  • Remember to also consider your and other people's safety. Numerous people have been injure or killed in driving ranges by golf balls or club heads. Some of the most important points are listed below.
  • Watch who's behind you and next to you.
  • Don't walk close to other people.
  • Don't go to pick up any balls or tees.
  • Use common sense.
  • Another place to practise in your local golf club is the putting and chipping area. There you can practise your short hits, which are the most important. You should especially emphasize putting. You can also practise putting at home or in the office using small putting carpets or practise holes. You can also practise other shots in your backyard. You can practise chipping by placing a bucket on your lawn and then trying to hit into it. You can also set a net between two trees to practise long shots, but you should be quite careful not to miss the net.

In some countries you can't play golf all year around, but you can use inside practising places. They are basically big halls that are small driving ranges, there is usually a net at the back of the hall to stop the long hits. You can also practise putting at home during the winter.
